Optimise documents, spreadsheets and presentations on your file servers
NXPowerLite File Server Edition radically reduces the size of the Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations on your file servers. Files remain in their original format, with no discernible loss of quality - and there's no need to unzip before using them.
It runs as a scheduled process: searching through a configurable set of directories, automatically optimising files and replacing the original files with the smaller, optimised versions. 'Rules' can be easily set up, allowing certain files to be treated differently. For example, a rule could be set to use stronger compression on files that have not been edited for more than a year.
The first time you use NXPowerLite File Server Edition, you'll reclaim vast amounts of existing server storage. By scheduling it to run regularly, you can continue to free up storage on an ongoing basis.
NX Powerlite have released Version 3.7.4 of the NX Powerlite File Server Edition; below are the improvements to this version:
File Server Edition fixes
- Evaluation Wizard would appear to "hang" if the NXPowerLite COM+ application was not configured properly. This is now fixed and a suitable error message is generated.
- Installer now disables Windows Error Reporting for COM+ applications, in order to prevent administrators receiving a series of error reports when logging into the server.
- Fixed a problem that could cause the NXPowerLite File Server Edition process to fail or the Evaluation Wizard to "hang" when scanning a directory with a path exactly 259 characters long (directories with names 259 characters or longer will be skipped).
Optimizer fixes
- Fixed a problem that could cause images in EMF format to be corrupted when optimized (case 80886).
- Fixed a problem that could cause some DOC files to fail to optimize with error message "HRESULT(0) - reading 0 bytes from stream" (support case 80590).
- Fixed "Entry in Zip not found" error when optimizing PPTX files created with Think-cell Layout (support case 80571).
- Fixed a problem that could cause grouped images in PPT or DOC files to be scaled down too much (case 79700).
- Improved optimization of some DOC files (case 80462).

Runs completely unattended ~ NXPowerLite File Server Edition runs periodically as a scheduled, unattended process. If it doesn't get through all your files in the time allocated, it will automatically continue from the point it reached the next time it runs.
Automatically optimises new files ~ Once a file has been optimised, it will only be re-optimised if it increases in size. You can choose how much a file can increase before it is re-optimised. So, for example, you can configure NXPowerLite to re-optimise any files that have increased in size by more than 1MB.
Incredibly flexible configuration ~ NXPowerLite can be set up using a text-based configuration file, for maximum flexibility. You can specify which server directories are searched and which optimisation levels are applied. 'Rules' can be configured to provide even greater control.
Customisable optimisation settings ~ NXPowerLite's optimisation settings are fully customisable, for the perfect balance of quality and compression. Older files can be optimised using stronger compression, for even greater savings.
No end-user involvement ~ There's no end-user training or involvement required. In fact, end users won't even be aware that their files have been optimised.
Software-only solution ~ NXPowerLite is a software-only solution that's easy to deploy. It requires no additional hardware - in fact it can help extend the working life of your existing hardware, which is cost-effective and fantastic for the environment.
Minimum requirements
NXPowerLite File Server Edition 3.7.4 is compatible with servers running Microsoft Windows 2000 or later. However, it can be tasked to optimise files on other platforms, such as NetApp servers.
Requires JScript 5.5 or later.

- Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (Excel 97-2008)
- Microsoft PowerPoint presentations (PowerPoint 97-2008)
Also optimises files created in other office productivity suites (such as Google Apps, iWork, Lotus Symphony, OpenOffice or StarOffice), providing they are saved in the Microsoft Office formats.
Evaluation
You can evaluate NXPowerLite File Server Edition for up to 30 days.
The software includes a 'dryrun' mode that you can run on your production servers. In this mode, NXPowerLite will examine the files on your servers and create a report showing exactly how much storage you could save.
