The MDM Product

The MDM product is NotifyMDM. Founded in 1994, Notify Corp has 12 years of mobility experience. They are development partners with notable network and device companies, such as Novell GroupWise (8 years), Apple, RIM, Symbian, Palm, Google Android and Microsoft ActiveSync.

How Does it Work?

The NotifyMDM system is designed to work with any email platform supporting ActiveSync. All email and Personal Information Manager (PIM) synchronisation is accomplished by using ActiveSync. Blackberry devices are synced using Notify Corp's product NotifySync. This gives them ActiveSync functionality. ActiveSync is the gateway to automated email setup and security features such as required passcodes, either simple or complex, remote wipe, either full or selective.

The Essentials suite of services includes:

Planning

Before an MDM system can be implemented, planning is vital. The organisation needs to consider factors that will affect the amount and type of control possible. Are all the devices corporate owned or will the organisation allow privately owned devices as well? Other things to consider: what security should be enforced? Should the location of the device be tracked? Understand the features that are available to differing devices, as their capabilities all vary. What are the workflows required to provision devices? If your users are remote, how do you configure and update devices that may never come back into the office?

A checklist will be provided that will identify the broad areas of planning, with further consultation to decide on details.

Provisioning for an On-Demand (Hosted) Configuration

In an On-Demand configuration, Pacen will host the application and will provision the necessary administrative accounts.

Installation of an On-Premise (In-House) Configuration

In an On-Premise installation, Pacen will install the application on a server provided by the customer.

Configuration

Based on the planning, Pacen will configure the application to achieve those aims, resulting in Policy Suites for different purposes. Device connection schedules are established. The client is downloaded to devices and configured.

Deployment

Deployment of the NotifyMDM app and all configured settings to devices. If necessary, end users will be guided in the steps to achieve this.

HandHeld Admin Training

Administrative users will need to be trained in the use of NotifyMDM. Administrative operations include:

  • Creating policy suites, or sets of settings for various purposes
  • Adding new users and devices
  • Tracking location and information such as installed OS version
  • Locking and wiping lost devices
  • Connecting devices to ActiveSync servers
  • Comparing devices against compliance criteria and blocking access to enterprise resources when a violation is detected.
  • Defining sets of approved mobile apps for pushing to devices
  • Setting up Wi-Fi connection details so devices can automatically access nodes without user intervention.

HandHeld End-User Training

We also like to think of the end user who will be unaware of the implications of certain features being turned off or otherwise controlled. We train end users in the use of the NotifyMDM app and any native or web apps that the organisation is deploying. We cover the policies defined by the organisation and how they affect them. End-user training is very flexible, taking into account remote and on-site users. Topics covered:

  • How to use the NotifyMDM app and its importance to the service IT provides the user
  • Outline of the organisation's policies so that the user knows what they can and can't do
  • The limitations of various devices
  • Answering of any questions the users may have.

HandHeld Custom

The complexity of MDM can require custom configuration and training. For example, an extremely large deployment to BYO devices may require custom training of end users. How do you train half a million users, a mix of corporate employees with company-owned devices and a great percentage of company customers with company-developed apps?
